Municipality of Georgios Karaiskakis
PB2

The Municipality of Georgios Karaiskakis with a population of  5.278 people, is located in the Regional unit of Arta, concerns extensively mountainous and disadvantaged areas, appears to have one of the highest aging &  lower  density  of  population  indicator  in  Europe,  and  is  characterized  by  delayed  development, depopulation,  and  geographical  isolation  due  to  inadequate  and  low-quality  road  infrastructures.  It  is  a
profoundly rural area, with the main sectors of the economy being livestock, agriculture and ecotourism.
The administrative boundaries of the Municipality extend to 463.9 km2 in the Regional unit of Arta in Epirus Region with a major part of it covered by the protected area of Koilada Αcheloou & Ori Valtou (GR2110006 NATURA 2000 - Protected under the Birds Directive).

The protected areas are productive resources which, in addition to the ecosystem services they provide, are a factor in the development of both the primary and the tertiary sector (agrοtourism & ecotourism) which are key productive sectors of the partners regions.
The  Municipality  of  Georgios  Karaiskakis  has  the  necessary  administrative  capacity  and  operational competence for the implementation of co-financed projects. It has a sufficiently staffed technical service and supply department for the implementation of road construction infrastructure interventions based on
its competence.
During the period 2014-2020 the municipality successfully implemented 2 projects within the framework of the Program 2014 - 2020 Interreg IPA CBC Greece – Albania (EXTROVERT ROADS and SMENSWICT).
At  the  same  time,  the  Municipality  of  Georgios  Karaiskakis  has  implemented  a  number  of  co-financed projects within the framework of NSRF as well as other funding programs (Antonis Tritsis, Filodimos etc.)
